Medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, may help some people stabilize during withdrawal or reduce the risk of immediate relapse while they engage in recovery work.
MAT is not mandatory and is not appropriate for every participant. Any medication decision requires an assessment and ongoing supervision by qualified medical professionals.
Part of a broader plan
Medication is used alongside counseling, behavioral-health support and recovery planning. The care team monitors effectiveness, progress and medical necessity and adjusts the plan when needed.
Questions to discuss with the team
- Current substance use and withdrawal risks
- Past treatment and relapse history
- Other medications and health conditions
- Goals for counseling and continuing care
