An intervention is a planned conversation in which loved ones express concern about self-destructive alcohol or drug use and offer a path toward help.

## Why professional support may help

A trained intervention specialist can help a family develop a strategy, prepare what to say and respond to different outcomes. There is no single plan that fits every person or situation.

## When safety comes first

Some situations require immediate action. In an overdose or medical emergency, seek emergency medical help. If anyone is in danger, call 911. Avoid escalating a confrontation or trying to physically prevent someone from leaving.

## A caring first conversation

When there is no immediate danger, a calm conversation may begin with specific observations, concern and a clear offer to help the person explore treatment. Aim 4 Recovery can discuss next steps with families who need guidance.
